Islamic Family Law in North West Nigeria Impact Case Study
The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to assisting women in claiming their legal rights in all aspects of life. Since its inception in 1999, WRAPA has worked tirelessly to provide women across Nigeria with the mechanisms, tools, and interventions they need to better their lives both individually and collectively.
In recognition of these contributions, the MacArthur Foundation since 2006 has invested $825,000 (Eight hundred and twenty five thousand Dollars) in the WRAPA Islamic Family Law (IFL) project, designed to improve IFL practices in North-West Nigeria especially as they relate to women’s rights under Shari’a and access to justice. This investment has translated into governance and islamic institutional reforms, the strengthening of community and family systems, improvement on the rights and quality of life of children in North-West Nigeria alongside a remarkable increase in women’s enjoyments of rights and access to justice
