ABOUT WRAPA
Founded in March 1999 by Hon. Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, Nigeria’s former First Lady WRAPA has intervened and touched the lives of abused women in Nigeria. We are a leading voice in the advocacy and campaign against Violence against Women (VAW) in all its ramifications and as host and member of a 55 member Coalition, we have engaged in Parliamentary Advocacy and Public Education towards the enactment of the Violence Against Person Prohibition Law. We have designed and coordinated projects and advocacy for increased political participation of women in Nigeria. In 2003 WRAPA was a leading voice in the protests following the marginalization of women in political party primaries and in the run up to the 2007 elections WRAPA was responsible for the coordination of activities aimed at enhancing the performance of women in politics in the six states of the North Central Zone and the FCT. The outcome is xx% of the women in the National Assembly are from the zone. We engage in advocacy and public education on international law with our campaign and advocacy seeing to Nigeria’s ratification in 2004 of the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa. Along with the Ministry of women affairs , the Legislature and NGOs we are working towards Nigeria’s domestication of CEDAW and the domestication of the AU Protocol on women’s rights.

WRAPA is a membership organization of men women, and youth with over 23,000 registered members as at December 2007. A network of volunteers in all the 36 states and the FCT supports our operations
and funding is through membership fees, dues, and donations from individuals, corporate organizations and international agencies. Other sources are investments, volunteer services, and subsidized charges for some services.
WRAPA has over 20 adult literacy, legal aid and vocational training centers in at least 15 of the 36 states and the FCT. In 2007 and with support from the Netherlands Embassy a pilot project aimed at empowering women through a coordinated approach was implemented with success recorded leading to the possibility of further support from the same source to replicate the project in 10 states (5 urban and 5 rural).
AREAS OF STRENGTH
- An active and influential Board of Trustees.
- Tested expertise in legal aid and counseling services for women.
- Extensive national network of membership & volunteers spread in all the 36 states and some local governments.
- Delivery and credibility in project implementation.
OUR PROGRAMS
WRAPA’s work revolves around the enhancement of access to justice for Nigerian women especially the weak and vulnerable whose knowledge of their rights and capacity to seek redress is limited. Access to Justice for the Nigerian woman whether in the formal or informal justice sector belies the notion of equality before the law. This factor is most significant as Nigeria has signed and ratified the international instruments, Treaties and Conventions as a member state of the United Nations, Continental and Regional bodies. Therefore, and in order to give succor to Nigerian women who still suffer from discrimination at public and private levels, Since inception, WRAPA has as its core activity, rendered conclusive legal aid and counseling services to over 10,000 women across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.
