RAISING HER VOICE PROJECT

The ‘Raising Her Voice Project’ (RHV) is a portfolio of projects in 17 countries across the world and focuses on improving governance and transparency by recognising and increasing the significant contribution poor women can make to public life and in promoting their own rights. The project employs four approaches to reach its objectives: networking, lobbying and advocacy with poor women activists; empowering and building capacity of CSOs. In Africa, RHV project is being implemented in 8 countries including Nigeria with the same goal through strengthening national legislation, adequate budgeting and implementation of the AU protocol on the rights of women through community popularisation and advocacy activities. Oxfam GB is supporting Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) to work with the African Union, the Nigerian Governments and CSOs in Nigeria to ultimately enable the domestication of the protocol in Nigeria by 2012.

The Raising Her Voice (RHV) project officially took off in Nigeria on 5 th August 2008. As the projects is in its final months of project implementation, it became imperative to evaluate its
performance in relation to the application and promotion of the rights of grass roots women in
line with the projects objective.

OUTCOMES/IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

  • Passage integral laws on women’s rights at both state and national levels.
  •  AU women’s protocol domesticated in Nigeria and turn into law by 2012.
  •  Enhanced capacity of civil society and other women focused organisations to promote the rights and interest of poor women in governance by 2012.
  •  Poor women empowered to understand and assert their rights to participate in governing institutions in Nigeria by 2012.
  •  Strengthened alliance with grassroots women activists and their allies I Nigeria.
  • Improved integration of the interests and concerns of poor women into legislative and other policy processes/frameworks.
  • Increased visibility of women’s rights issues through production and dissemination of IEC materials and media advocacy.
  •  Response to women’s rights issues.
